I can see the HeyHelp labels in my Gmail, but tagging doesn't work

If you can already see HeyHelp’s labels inside Gmail but emails aren’t being auto-tagged, here are the most common causes and how to fix them.

Note HeyHelp starts tagging new emails from the moment you install it. It won’t process older emails already in your inbox (yet — that's on our roadmap).

1. Your auto tagging may be disabled

Tagging only works if the auto-tagging feature is enabled in your dashboard. To checl:

2. Your API key may have become invalid

Another frequent reason is that your API key has become invalid.

When you first add your API key in Settings → API Keys, HeyHelp will warn you immediately if it’s invalid. However, sometimes a key becomes invalid after it’s set up (e.g., revoked, expired, or misconfigured). That’s when tagging stops working.

Why would my API key become invalid?

There are a number of possibilities, including:

  • User Revocation: You can manually revoke an API key to stop its functionality.
  • Inactivity: The AI provider may deactivate API keys that have been dormant for a certain period, such as 180 days, to prevent misuse.
  • Security Violations: If your API key is leaked, it can be deactivated to prevent unauthorized access and charges to your account.
  • Terms of Service Violations: Non-compliance with the provider's terms of service can lead to the deactivation of your API keys and account.
  • Account Suspension or Closure: If your account has issues like billing problems or is closed, your API keys will become invalid.
  • Incorrect Key: You might be using an old or incorrect API key.
  • Rate Limit Exceeded: Repeatedly exceeding the rate limits for API calls can result in temporary or permanent restrictions on your API access.

How to fix it?

If your key is revoked or deactivated, you will need to generate a new one from your account. Use the links below for each AI provider:

4. Try reconnecting your Gmail account

The issue might have been caused by an issue in the connection with your Gmail account. Try those troubleshooting steps to reconnect:

  1. Go to https://app.heyhelp.ai/assistants and disconnect your account
  2. Go to your Google accounts > Security > Third party apps and services, click on HeyHelp, scroll down and select "Delete all connections"
  3. Go back to https://app.heyhelp.ai/assistants and re-connect your account (and accept the permissions)

Then, try sending an email to yourself and check if the email gets tagged.
